The plant will boost production capacity to 750 000 engines per year
Ford Motor announced Saturday that its joint venture to build a new engine manufacturing plant in the city of Chongqing, in southwest China, at a cost of $ 500 million for support the expansion of the main global auto market.

Changan Ford Mazda Automobile signed a memorandum of understanding with the local government to build the plant, which will more than double the existing capacity and support the manufacture of its vehicles, Ford said in a statement.

The joint venture is a three-way alliance between Changan Motors, Ford and Japan’s Mazda Motor Corp.

Last year China surpassed the U.S. as the largest car market worldwide and has been one of the highlights as the global industry struggles to recover from a sharp fall.

It is expected the construction of the new plant this year and production will begin in 2013. The plant with a capacity of 400 thousand engines, boost capacity to 750 thousand engines a year from the current 350 000.
